ATVs live up to their name by conquering tough terrains and landscapes, however, they still have their limitations. We here at Nielsen Enterprises want to help you understand your quad, so we’ve put together some information on the ground clearance of ATVs. To learn more, or to see the ATVs we have for sale, visit our dealership in Lake Villa, IL, today!

What It Means

An ATV’s ground clearance is essentially just the distance between its undercarriage and the ground below. Of course, different parts of the ATV’s underside will have different ground clearances, and it’s helpful to know the measurements for all of them. To measure that, park the ATV on flat, level ground. Simply take a measuring tape to the lowest bit of any part of the ATV and see how far it is from the ground.

Why It Matters

Both low and high ground clearance have their advantages. Low ground clearance means the ATV is lower to the ground overall, making it easier to get on and off — not to mention easier to load and unload cargo from. This is especially useful if you’re using your ATV as a workhorse.

High ground clearance is better for more difficult and uneven terrain that’s littered with obstacles. ATVs with high ground clearance are less likely to scrape against something that will cause damage, making them perfect for lots of off-roading.
